Homes: What you can buy for $4 million

Buyers with $4 million to spend on a home can buy fairly luxurious properties in just about any market.

There's a reason for that: Homes costing $4 million are almost 21.5 times more expensive than the national median home value, which is currently $186,100, according to Zillow.

These pricey properties often come with upscale features like luxuriously landscaped grounds, swimming pools, indoor or outdoor sports courts and breathtaking views.

But that doesn't mean all $4 million properties are created equal. For example, a three-bedroom condo can eat up your full budget in parts of New York City. A $4 million Chicago abode may come with an impressive Lake Michigan view, but it might still be tiny compared to what you could buy in less expensive markets far from the country's coasts. For the same amount of money, you could spread out on 51 acres in Colorado Springs with your own private hiking trails and views of Pikes Peak or in a 17-bedroom riverfront mansion in Wichita with fairy tale castle-like turrets and elaborately carved fireplaces.

Click ahead to see the luxurious pads you can purchase with $4 million in 10 cities across the country.
