Homes: What you can buy for $3 million

It's no surprise that most homes on the market for $3 million come with features that many buyers consider "extras."

At about 16.4 times more than the national median home value of $183,000, these homes are packed with upscale finishes and perks -- from a beachfront property in Hawaii to a sky-high glass and steel condo in Baltimore.

Gourmet chef's kitchens with stainless steel appliances are standard features at this price point, and pools, spas and even elevators are relatively common amenities. Some $3 million homes also have more unique features, like a backyard basketball court or rough stone walls that are part of an adjacent mountain.

Of course, $3 million won't buy the same amount of space and luxury everywhere. In Portland, Oregon, you can buy a two-bedroom condo with terraces. In Atlanta, you can buy five bedrooms and a pool.
