Woman found dead in fire near San Gabriel River in Long Beach

Homicide detectives are investigating after a woman was found dead in a fire near the San Gabriel River in Long Beach, police said.

Officers responded to a call about a brush fire near 2nd Street and the river at about 4:24 a.m. Sunday, according to the Long Beach Police Department. When firefighters responded, they discovered the victim's body after putting out the flames.

Detectives are still working to identify a possible suspect, according to a statement the police department issued Sunday, which noted that the motive and circumstances surrounding the woman's death remain under investigation.

Her identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. 

In the statement, police said homicide detectives launched an investigation "due to the nature of the incident." However, no other details about the case have been released by authorities.
