UC President Janet Napolitano To Step Down In 2020

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) - University of California President Janet Napolitano announced plans Wednesday to resign next year.

Napolitano made the announcement during a UC Board of Regents meeting at UCLA.

The former Department of Homeland Security secretary was the first woman to lead the 10-campus UC system, a role she's had since Sept. 2013.

In a statement, Napolitano described the decision to step down as tough and bittersweet, adding "But the time is right."
