Investigation ongoing after Orange County police fatally shoot man who allegedly stabbed woman

A man who allegedly killed a woman at a Tustin apartment complex on Monday was fatally shot by police the same day. 

In a news release from the Tustin Police Department, officers said they were called to the Briarwood Apartments in the 1400 block of Walnut Avenue at around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a "domestic incident that was updated to a possible homicide."

Officers said that upon arrival, they found an unresponsive woman lying on the floor inside of an apartment unit. They made contact with a man inside the apartment, who allegedly began to walk towards officers with a knife. 

At this point, the officers opened fire, according to the release. 

Despite attempted life-saving measures, police said the suspect died at the scene.

"It was discovered that the female at the scene was deceased and may have been for some time prior to the officers' arrival," the release said. "The relationship between the male and the female victim is under investigation."

Neither the man nor the woman has yet been identified as the investigation continues. 

The Orange County District Attorney's Office has launched an independent investigation into the shooting, as they do with all officer-involved shootings. 

Neighbors say that the incident is unheard of in their usually quiet community. 

"I did hear the shots ... It was one of those where I thought, 'Oh, that must have been fireworks,'" said Lindsay Bebout. "I heard the sirens and then five minutes later I walked outside and I see everybody. That has never happened since I've lived here; I have never been worried since I've lived here, so I'm still a little shaken."
