Woman Recounts Moments Before Car Plowed Into Rialto Bank

RIALTO (CBSLA.com) — A woman Tuesday recalled the moments before a car came barreling through a Rialto bank, injuring her toddler.

The crash happened sometime after noon at a Wells Fargo branch bank on Foothill Boulevard.

"As I turn, I see the car heading our way," said Rosie Pasillas, the toddler's mother. "When he ran into the glass and the debris came our way, like I said, it happened so fast."

"It was a bang, a scoop, a fall and then everyone just yelling," she explained. "I couldn't tell you how I scooped him. How I ended up in the area that we ended up in."

The vehicle narrowly missed Pasillas and her son.

"I heard everyone screaming, 'Oh, my God! The baby! The baby!' And I looked down and there was a little boy cuddled in his mother's arms and the mother was against the wall pinned with debris," said Cesar Orozco, a witness.

He added: "I got some of the stuff off of them. It was kind of so fast how everything happened."

Pasillas and her 2-year-old son were taken to a hospital and examined. They're both doing fine.

"He's doing great," Pasillas said of her son. "He's not complaining of any pain. He has a few scratches, a bloody nose, but not complaining of any pain."

Police identified the driver as Ronald Smith, 68. Investigators say he may have been under the influence of prescription drugs at the time of the crash.

He was not arrested.

"I'm not upset. I couldn't even say that I forgive him because I'm not anyone to forgive him, you know what I mean? Things happen," Pasillas said.
