Dozens displaced after fire tears through Orange County apartment complex

Dozens of people were displaced when a 3-alarm blaze ripped through an apartment complex in Stanton on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Orange County Fire Authority reported that the fire broke out at around 11:14 a.m. in the 7500 block of Katella Street. Crews said the flames were initially found in a garage but quickly spread to the building's attic. 

Despite the intensity of the fire, which some neighbors said may have been fueled by lithium-ion batteries, no injuries were reported. 

"I was outside and I saw the explosion. I could feel the heat on my face," said Nicholas Kyriakos, one of the many who rushed from their apartments when the fire first broke out. "I talked to some of the guys who own the bikes, and they said that their garage was on fire and then it heated up the bikes and then their bike blew up." 

Kyriakos said that they told him their bikes blew up one after another in a chain reaction. 

"It only got worse because I saw the explosion from the bike," he said. 

Firefighters said that 39 people in total were displaced due to damage dealt by the flames. The Red Cross was contacted to help those impacted by the fire find shelter. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
