CHP Investigating After Officers Open Fire On Apparent Transient Man In Los Alamitos
LOS ALAMITOS (CBSLA) – Following a massive police standoff, an apparent transient man was found dead Thursday afternoon after California Highway Patrol officers opened fire on the man near a freeway in Los Alamitos.
Officers were called to assist Caltrans workers for maintenance near the southbound Katella Avenue on-ramp to the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway around 9:20 a.m.
"Two of our officers approached and made contact with a male pedestrian in the brush area and, at that time, an officer-involved shooting occurred," said Officer Duane Graham.
The CHP won't confirm if the man was armed and, if he was, who shot first. Officials would only say the man was later found dead in a tent surrounded by household items. The man has not yet been identified.
Graham said one of the two officers was hurt, but didn't say if the officer was shot.
The freeway was briefly shut down in both directions, but southbound lanes remained closed as of 5 p.m.
