Second Case Of Enterovirus Reported In LA County
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles County's second case of enterovirus was confirmed Wednesday.
The child, between the age of 5 and 10 years old, has since been released from the hospital, officials with Children's Hospital said.
KNX 1070's Megan Goldsby reports the child became ill in late August with a respiratory infection and then developed acute limb weakness.

"It is important to note that while enteroviruses are very common, especially among children, most cases of enterovirus will not lead to serious illness," said Dr. Jeffrey Gunzenhauser of the LA health department. "Acute limb weakness and other neurological symptoms are uncommon with any enterovirus, including EV-D68."
On Tuesday, officials at Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach said a local child had been diagnosed with enterovirus, the first in the county.
"Yes, the child was critically ill, necessitating intensive care," said David Michalik, a pediatric infectious disease specialist. The child was hospitalized for week.
The virus has infected 443 children across 40 states, with one death reported in Rhode Island.
In California, other cases have been reported in Ventura and San Diego counties.
Symptoms of enterovirus D-68 include rapid breathing, sneezing, wheezing, runny nose, coughing and fatigue. Some children may also have a fever.
Children displaying these symptoms should see a doctor immediately.
To help prevent the spread of illness officials recommend:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against EV-D68
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick
- Stay home if you are sick
