Search For Poisonous Cobra Enters Second Day In Thousand Oaks

THOUSAND OAKS (CBSLA.com) — Animal control officers Thursday continued to search for a poisonous cobra snake that attacked a dog in Ventura County.

The 5-foot long Albino Monocled Cobra, native of southeast Asia, was last seen Monday night in the 1300 block of Rancho Lane in Thousand Oaks after it attacked a greyhound, officials said.

The dog, Kiko, was bitten in the neck and taken to a veterinarian. It is expected to make a full recovery.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife and LA Animal Services officers have posted informational flyers in the neighborhood and have urged residents to keep pets and children inside.

It was not known if the snake had hit venom glands removed and Animal control officers were operating under the assumption that the cobra is venomous.

"They need to find it," resident Steve Toland said. "There's a school not far away and they have the ability to travel."

The owner of the cobra has not come forward, however, a company that rents out exotic animals for film and TV shoots is located just 10 miles away.

It is illegal to have a cobra for a pet and a special permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is needed to be in possession of one.

The company, Brocketts Film Fauna, advertises an albino monocled cobra available for rent but could not be reached for comment. Authorities say they are looking into whether the cobra belongs to the company.

If anyone sees the snake, immediately call 911 or (818) 991-0071.
