San Fernando City Councilwoman Charged With Battery Against Former Lover

SAN FERNANDO (CBS) — The political future of San Fernando City Councilmember Maribel De La Torre, already under fire from a local recall campaign, just got more complicated.

De La Torre was fingerprinted and charged on Friday afternoon with vandalism and battery following an alleged physical confrontation with Councilman Mario Hernandez.

De La Torre and Hernandez were allegedly involved in an extra-marital affair.

Hernandez, who resigned from office on Tuesday, told police De La Torre punched him, tried to strangle him and smashed his laptop during the June 28 confrontation.

The incident resulted in both parties filing for restraining orders against each another.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Gil Carrillo who was overseeing the investigation was fired by the council after just four months on the job. However, neither De La Torre or Hernandez voted on the firing.

De La Torre is expected to make a court appearance next week.
