Protesters in Channel Islands denounce cuts to National Parks workforce
As the sun set over the Channel Islands Wednesday, protesters rallied in the rain to denounce the recent cuts to the National Park Service.
"As a community, we need to stand up and make our voices heard and let the current administration know that these cuts are not acceptable to us," protester Daniel Hulst said.
The Department of Government Efficiency has cut federal workers at National Parks like Channel Islands to reduce the budget. Marine scientist Kenan Chan is one of the 10% of the Channel Islands workforce who lost their jobs. His firing and others across the National Park Service have left fewer workers to do critical jobs, especially with the busy summer travel season around the corner.
"These busy parks will see everything from longer lines, more difficult times getting to campsites," Chan said. "They might see bathrooms that are not as well maintained."
The Channel Islands National Park is what many consider to be the crown jewel of Ventura County. It has five uninhabited wild and wonderful islands that attract hikers, bikers, kayakers and campers.
With so much uncertainty, many are not backing down with support coming from all over the country.
"Public land is essential to Patagonia," said Patagonia CEO Ryan Gallert. "This is personal. Our headquarters are up the road in Ventura and has been for 50 years."
