Police warn residents about rise in "key cloner" car thefts in San Fernando Valley
Police are warning residents of a rise is "key cloner" car thefts in the San Fernando Valley, where thieves have been using electronic devices to replicate key fobs.
"Thieves are taking advantage of this newer technology by using an aftermarket device, about the size of a cellphone or tablet, to remotely scan for a key fob signal and quickly create a cloned key," said a statement from the Burbank Police Department.
They say that similar devices can also be plugged in underneath a car's dashboard to download information, which thieves can use to program a key fob.
Residents are advised to take a number of precautions to keep their vehicles and belongings save. Tips include, parking in a secure area, using motion-sensing lights and security cameras in areas where one typically parks, storing key fobs in signal-blocking pouches and installing GPS tracking devices inside cars. They also advise that people should check with dealerships to see if there are any security software updates.
