'Phonehenge' Builder Jailed By Judge
LANCASTER (AP) — The eccentric California creator of a Mojave Desert compound of whimsical buildings known as "Phonehenge West" has been jailed for failing to obey a judge's order to tear down the illegal structures.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Daviann Mitchell put off Kim Fahey's sentencing Friday for code violations but ordered him into custody immediately, saying the refusal to demolish the structures and disconnect electricity put his family, the community and first-responders at risk.
Fahey told the court he has not had enough time to tear down the buildings and doesn't have a crane to do it safely.
The 59-year-old Fahey was convicted of a dozen misdemeanor building code infractions in a jury trial last month. His new sentencing date is July 22.
