Knife-Wielding Suspect Hospitalized Following Deputy-Involved Shooting In Panorama City

PANORAMA CITY (CBSLA.com) — Homicide detectives Thursday investigated the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting that took place in Panorama City.

The shooting unfolded just before 3 p.m. Wednesday near Ventura Canyon Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard, according to Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies.

"Investigators have learned that the suspect was on a Metro Transit Bus when he had an argument with the bus driver," Deputy Trina Schrader said. "The suspect then went to the back of the bus and sat down. He suddenly jumped up, stabbed another male passenger in the neck, and a female passenger in the arm."

Deputies said the suspect then exited the bus.

Paramedics transported the victims, an 18-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, to a hospital for treatment of stab wounds. Both victims are expected to survive their injuries.

The bus driver provided authorities with a description of the suspect -- a 55-year-old African American who appears to be a transient -- following the incident.

"A short time later, the suspect [got] on another bus," Schrader explained. "The bus driver recognize[d] the suspect from his fellow driver's description and alert[ed] deputies."

Authorities were able to catch up to the bus while the suspect was still on board.

When deputies approached the bus to try and get the suspect to exit he refused and brandished a knife.

A deputy-involved shooting subsequently occurred.

Paramedics transported the suspect to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the shooting. he is expected to survive his injuries as well.

No deputies were injured during the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
