The situation unfolded at about 2 a.m. in the 12900 block of Desmond Street when Los Angeles police responded to a 911 call from family members of the suspect claiming he was holding a knife and attempting to hit them. There were at least six family members in the home at the time.

Officers arrived on scene and evacuated the suspect's family. The suspect himself initially refused to come out, and then, while officers were waiting for reinforcements, he climbed out of a side window, according to LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar.

When he refused to put down the knife, officers fired 40mm beanbag rounds at him, police said. However, those failed to halt him, and he began to charge at the officers, who were standing near a patrol vehicle. They attempted to fire another beanbag round at him, and when that again failed, the officers shot him, Aguilar said.

"At that time, another beanbag round was fired at the suspect, and an officer-involved shooting occurred," Aguilar said.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition with at least one gunshot wound. A knife was recovered at the scene. The man, who is in his 20s, was not identified.

No officers were hurt.

The exact circumstances which prompted the 911 call were not confirmed.
