Man Dies Of Burn Injuries 3 Days After Being Set On Fire

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 63-year-old man who was set on fire while sitting in his sport utility vehicle over the weekend died Monday.

Jerry Payne died at about 2 a.m. at a hospital of the burns he suffered in the Friday night attack outside a 7-Eleven in Long Beach.

Raymond Sean Clark, described as a 38-year-old transient was arrested and booked on suspicion of attempted murder shortly after the attack, Long Beach police Sgt. Aaron Eaton said. Clark will be re-booked Monday afternoon on suspicion of murder and bail will be increased from the current $502,200.

No motive was known for the attack, which happened about 5:15 p.m. Friday near Clark Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway.

Payne was alone in his SUV when the suspect approached him at the driver's side window and threw a flammable substance inside. Several witnesses came to his aid by extinguishing the flames.

Clark was arrested about a block away, after witnesses to the attack pointed him out to arriving officers, Eaton said.

Police say the men did not know each other.

Anyone with information about the attack can call homicide detectives Scott Lasch or Donald Goodman at (562) 570-7244.
