Long Beach police arrest 31-year-old man for deadly 2023 crash

Long Beach police have arrested a man in connection with a two-car crash in 2023 that left one person dead.

In a news release, police said that it happened back on Jan. 29, 2023 at around 4 a.m., when officers were dispatched to Magnolia Avenue and Hill Street upon learning of a collision.

While investigating the crash, they determined that a 1996 Toyota Camry was driving southbound on Magnolia when it was struck by a 2021 Hyundai Sonata that was driving on the wrong side of the road while traveling north at a high rate of speed.

The impact of the crash caused the Camry to collide with several other parked cars in the area. Roberto Rodriguez, who was driving the Camry, was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the Hyundai was hospitalized with critical injuries following the crash, police said. They determined that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the incident.

On Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026, nearly three years to the date of the original incident, police arrested 31-year-old Ivan Olarte-Torres at his home in Whittier in connection with the incident. He was booked at the Long Beach City Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and had his bail set at $50,000.

Anyone who knows more about the incident was asked to contact Long Beach police at (562) 570-7355.
