LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Unified School District Wednesday announced it has offered approximately $17 million to dozens of students who alleged they were abused by a former teacher at Miramonte Elementary School.
The LAUSD has offered money to students and families represented by attorneys Luis Carillo and Brian Claypool.
The settlement covers 40 of the 191 lawsuits filed against the district after former third-grade teacher Mark Berndt was arrested in January 2012 and criminally charged with molesting 23 students over a five-year period at the school.
Allegations against him include feeding some of the students his own semen in a bizarre game. He pleaded not guilty in February 2012.
There are approximately 20 more cases in the legal system after roughly 61 were settled in March.
The families will have 30 days to accept the offer, according to the LAUSD.
