LAUSD Inducts First Inaugural Class Into H.S. Sports Hall Of Fame
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Don Drysdale, John Elway and other star student athletes were honored at the inaugural ceremony for the LAUSD High School Sports Hall of Fame, held at the USC campus Sunday.
The 55-member class also included Tom Bradley and Drysdale's fellow Baseball Hall of Fame members Sparky Anderson and Ozzie Smith; Elway's fellow Pro Football Hall of Fame members Tom Fears, Hugh McElhenny and Bob Waterfield; Basketball Hall of Fame members Cynthia Cooper, Gail Goodrich, Alex Hannum and Tex Winter; Heisman Trophy winner Mike Garrett; former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Jack Kemp; the late longtime City Councilman John Ferraro; and swimming star-turned-actress Esther Williams.
In addition to the athletes, the Hall of Fame class consisted of coaches and contributors to sports. Among the coaches honored was Rod Dedeaux, a Hollywood High School graduate who coached USC to 11 NCAA baseball championships.
Bradley, Los Angeles' mayor from 1973 to 1993 and a quarter-mile runner at Poly High School, was selected in the contributor category, along with Emmett Ashford, Major League Baseball's first black umpire and a graduate of Jefferson High School.
Criteria for selection included having significant accomplishment in sports in high school and beyond, and good character. All honorees had to be at least 35 years old.
