Pursuit Suspect In Custody Following Standoff With Officers In South LA

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) LAPD officers on Monday evening took a DUI suspect into custody following a high-speed pursuit that took them through downtown Los Angeles and Gardena, followed by a 90-minute standoff in South LA.

During the pursuit, the suspect's Dodge truck collided with at least one LAPD vehicle and at one point was driving along railroad tracks.

At around 4:30 p.m., the truck could be seen from SKY9 traveling southbound on the 110 freeway near downtown Los Angeles at a high rate of speed.

An LAPD car attempted a PIT maneuver in an effort to slow down or stop the suspect. LAPD also attempted to block traffic for a portion of the pursuit to slow down the suspect.

The truck escaped and continued south along the 110 Freeway. The truck exited the 110 Freeway, onto Redondo Beach Blvd. in Gardena, where the truck was still being tailed by officers.

After leading officers along surface streets in Gardena, the driver got onto the northbound 110 Freeway and could be seen again driving at a high rate of speed and weaving between lanes.

The truck then exited the freeway in South LA, where officers attempted to stop the truck with spike strips.

Shortly after, one of the suspect's front tires appeared to be losing air, as smoke and sparks could be seen coming from a rear tire, too.

The suspect stopped on a residential street in South LA near the corner of McKinley and 82nd St. and could be seen from SKy9 taking a drink of a beverage as he sat behind the wheel.

Officers were stopped a half-block behind the truck and pulled their weapons on the car as a small group of onlookers gathered at a street corner.

The suspect remained in his car. A 90-minute standoff with officers ensued.

Armored SWAT vehicles then boxed-in the truck.

The suspect exited his car at around 6:30 p.m., and appeared to urinate behind a car parked on a residential street.

Officers approached from behind and took the suspect into custody.
