LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police Chief Charlie Beck said Thursday his department is dealing with an increase in gang crime in Los Angeles.
Joining Mayor Eric Garcetti on KNX 1070's "Ask the Mayor" program, Chief Beck said there's no easy solution to the complex issue.
"The mayor and I both believe that law enforcement is not the only solution to gang violence," Chief Beck said. "You have to have intervention programs, prevention programs, you have to have re-entry programs.
"You have to look at it a number of ways," said Beck.
Almost 60 percent of all homicides in Los Angeles last year were gang-related, according to the LAPD Chief.
