La Habra Teachers Plan To Strike Over Salary Cut
LA HABRA (AP) — Teachers in the Southern California community of La Habra say they're poised to declare a strike after the school district unilaterally implemented a contract slashing salaries by 2 percent and imposing two furlough days.
Danette Brown, president of the union La Habra Education Association, said Wednesday that 91 percent of the district's 225 teachers have authorized a strike and that a walkout is imminent.
Brown says the contract is unfair because the district has received extra state and federal funding.
Superintendent Susan Belenardo says the additional $3.3 million allowed a proposed 5 percent salary cut to be reduced to 2 percent and avoid elimination of longevity pay hikes.
The K-through-8 district serves 5,400 students in a suburb southeast of Los Angeles.
