LA County Firefighters Travel To Arizona To Honor Fallen Heroes

LOS ANGELES ( — Hundreds of Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters early Tuesday morning were headed to Prescott, Ariz. for the memorial service honoring the 19 firefighters who died in the Yarnell Hill Fire.

Close to 200 firefighters were bused around 2 a.m. to join an additional 100 LA County firefighters along with thousands of colleagues from around the world.

"We are one big family," LA County Fire Capt. Tom Richards told KNX1070. "Once tragedy happened my office was getting phone call after phone call of people asking 'What can we do to help?'"

The 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots, including five Southern California natives, were killed June 30 in a fast-moving wildfire that burned nearly 8,400 acres.

The memorial service began at 11 a.m.
