Autopsy To Determine If Police Gunfire Killed Oxnard Jogger In Shootout
OXNARD (CBSLA.com) — Ventura authorities are awaiting autopsy results to determine if police gunfire killed a 21-year-old jogger during a shootout with two pursuit suspects.
Oxnard police say Alfonso Limon was an innocent victim who got caught in the crossfire between Oxnard police and two pursuit suspects Saturday night.
The shooting occurred around 10:15 p.m. when a vehicle carrying three men led Oxnard police on a brief pursuit following a routine traffic stop, Ventura County Sheriff's investigators said.
Two of the three suspects bailed from the vehicle on foot and engaged in a shootout with police.
Suspect Jose Zepeda, 24, and Limon, both of Oxnard, were killed in the shootout, authorities said.
The other foot chase suspect suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound. A third was arrested after surrendering to police.
"He was coming home from a run at Pacifica High School with my other brother, and they were walking home and they encountered the pursuit and they were caught in the middle of everything and my brother was killed," Limon's sister, Rebecca, said.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, officials said.
The shooting is being investigated by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, the Ventura County District Attorney's Office and the Oxnard Police Department.
