Woman Dies After Being Struck While Walking Grandchildren To School
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — The grandmother of a 6-year-old killed when a teenager in a pickup truck struck them in a Santa Ana street succumbed to her injuries, Santa Ana police said Thursday.
Carmen Teresa Silva, 51, and her grandson were hit around 7:40 a.m. Monday on Ramona Drive and Central Avenue.
A 17-year-old Segerstrom High School student allegedly stopped at a stop sign before turning left on Ramona when the accident occurred.
The boy and his grandmother were unresponsive when police arrived and were transported to a local hospital, where the 6-year-old was pronounced dead a short time later. Silva suffered multiple broken bones and head trauma.
The boy's 7-year-old sister was reportedly uninjured as she was able to jump out of the way, according to witnesses.
The teenager, who was driving his 13-year-old brother to school in a gray Ford truck, pulled over nearby. Police said he was devastated by the accident and was turned over to his parents.
