Gold Fire near Big Bear almost contained

A vegetation fire in the San Bernardino County area of Holcomb Valley near Big Bear erupted Monday morning.

The San Bernardino National Forest, with the assistance of the San Bernardino County Fire Department, responded to the fire dubbed the Gold Fire shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Forest Service 3N10.

Crews quickly began working to battle the flames and a full aircraft response was called. Ten engines, two crews and two water tenders have responded to the fire. On-scene units are working to get hoselay tied.

According to the San Bernardino National Forest, the fire had burned 1,079 acres and was 90% contained on Sunday, Aug. 17, more than a week after it first ignited. No structures were threatened.

The agency said the wildfire is difficult to contain because of its inaccessibility and steep terrain.

As the fire continued to burn, firefighters issued evacuation orders for the Holcomb Campground.
