LONG BEACH (CBS) — A former Long Beach fire captain behind bars on a DUI offense is in trouble one again, this time for being drunk in jail.
John David Hines, 38, was serving time for felony drunk driving charges when he allegedly filtered hand sanitizer and got drunk off the ethanol it produced.
The Long Beach Press-Telegram reports Hines had a blood alcohol level of .22 — nearly three times the legal driving limit — when he was discovered staggering around in jail.
Hines was originally sentenced to more than four years behind bars for a hit and run incident that left a bicyclist with severe injuries.
That sentence was stayed to a year in jail plus probation.
Hines now faces new charges and possible prison time for probation violations.
