Neighbors: Woman Found Dead In Westwood Apartment Fire Was UCLA Student
WESTWOOD (CBSLA.com) — A woman, whose body was found inside a burning apartment in Westwood, has been identified as a UCLA student. But her identity has not been released.
Firefighters responded to the 10900 block of Roebling Avenue at 7:05 a.m. Monday and extinguished the flames in about 15 minutes, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Neighbor Khoa Nguyen grabbed a fire extinguisher as flames raged about 15 feet from his apartment.
"I tried putting it out. And it didn't work," he said. "But then only when I started shooting the fire extinguisher, I saw more flames coming out, and then coming out through like top of the roof did I notice. Oh, it was actually pretty big."
Nguyen said about five members of UCLA's Pi Beta Phi sorority lived in the apartment.
Neighbors said most of the tenants at the apartment complex moved in Sunday.
Scott Huh said the victim was introduced to him by one of her roommates Sunday night. "Me and my friends were outside just hanging out. And she came out and just started talking to us," Huh said. "We just talked for like a bit."
Arson investigators will determine how the fire started. It is not known yet if the victim died in the fire or before.
According to the Daily Bruin, she was about to start her fourth year at UCLA and was studying psychology and Spanish.
The LAPD initially said the victim's boyfriend was a person-of-interest in the case but later revoked its statement.
