Doughty Agrees Long-Term Deal With Kings Worth $56M

LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) -- Drew Doughty has agreed to an eight-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings after the star defenseman skipped the first 13 days of training camp.

The Kings announced the new deal with Doughty late Thursday night. TSN reported the deal is worth $56 million.

The 21-year-old Doughty is among the NHL's top young defensemen after three seasons with the Kings. The Canadian Olympic gold medalist became the second-youngest Norris Trophy finalist in league history in 2010 after scoring 59 points.

Doughty was the 5th highest overall in the NHL with a time-on-ice averaging 25:38 per game.

Doughty was a restricted free agent this summer, and he didn't report to training camp earlier this month. Negotiations have dragged on until a few days before the Kings' departure for a European tour.
