Hit-and-run driver arrested for killing Culver City family's dog, police say
Culver City police arrested a hit-and-run suspect who they said killed a family's dog while it was being walked last week.
It happened August 14 at around 5:45 p.m. near Higuera Street and Lucerne Avenue, according to a social media post shared by the Culver City Police Department.
"The investigation determined that a pedestrian was walking their family dog through the marked crosswalk ... when a silver/gray SUV made a left turn onto westbound Lucerne Avenue and struck the dog," the post said. "The pedestrian was not struck or injured."
Police said that the driver briefly stopped before continuing to drive west on Lucerne.
"Despite efforts, the dog was confirmed deceased at the scene," according to the post.
Culver City PD officers investigating the crash were able to locate surveillance footage from nearby that captured the incident. With that evidence, additional video footage and "collaborative efforts with community members," police were able to identify the suspect and vehicle involved in the incident.
The suspect, who has only been identified as a man from Los Angeles, surrendered at the Culver City Police Department on Wednesday, August 19, after he was contacted by CCPD detectives, the post said.
He was arrested for hit-and-run. It's unclear when the suspect is due in court and what charges, if any, he will face.
"The Culver City Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family following the tragic loss of their beloved pet," the post said.
