Crews respond to Laguna Fire in Ventura County, prompting CSU Channel Island evacuation orders
Fire crews are working to put out the approximate 94-acre Laguna Fire near the California State University Channel Islands, which led to the evacuation of the Ventura County campus and a neighboring residential area, University Glen. Significant progress has been made, and the blaze is 70% contained.
The brush fire broke out near Laguna Road and Hueneme Road near the university, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. The wind-driven blaze moved its way up a hillside, as water-dropping aircraft and ground crews fought it.
Evacuation warnings have been issued for Laguna Zone 1 and 2, according to Cal Fire.
Fire crews were able to get the fire under control about three hours after it sparked. Evacuation orders for the university and nearby residential area were lifted around noon. University officials said classes remained canceled for the rest of the day but operations would resume Friday.
Potrero and Lewis's roads are closed as crews continue working.
A temporary evacuation point was established at Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley Street, Camarillo.
