Coroner: Death Imminent For Woman Hurt In Santa Monica Rampage

SANTA MONICA ( — The Los Angeles County coroner's office says death is "imminent" for one woman hospitalized following a deadly shooting rampage in Santa Monica.

Capt. John Kades of the Los Angeles County coroner's office told City News Service that the woman was being treated at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

The deadly rampage that spanned about a mile in diameter claimed five lives Friday, including the alleged gunman. Five others were hospitalized.

The shooting spree started on Yorkshire Avenue near Pico Boulevard where a fire broke out in a house, according to authorities. Two bodies were recovered from the home. Their identities have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Police say the suspect also fired several shots into a nearby car and then carjacked another vehicle.

"At Cloverfield and Pico, he shot at a big Blue Bus. On that bus, we had three injured. All minor and all walked into the hospital themselves," Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis said.

Police say the suspect also shot at a red Ford Explorer, which crashed through a brick wall. The driver died. The passenger was hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators believe the suspect then went to the Santa Monica College campus located at 1900 Pico Boulevard. Police believe the gunman first shot someone in front of the library and then went inside. That individual was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead sometime later.

Once inside the library, witnesses said the suspect allegedly started shooting indiscriminately at students. A short time later, the suspected gunman was shot and killed by a responding officer.

"[The suspect] went into the library. Engaged officers in a firefight. He was fatally wounded or he was shot, taken out of the library, and he expired here on the sidewalk." the sergeant said.
