TEMECULA (CBS) – An estimated 1,500 people turned out today for the first of two public meetings on a controversial 414-acre surface mining operation south of Temecula.
The first of two public meetings regarding a controversial 414-acre surface mining operation south of Temecula was held today.
Granite Construction, a multi-billion dollar corporation, has selected the pristine hills above the city of Temecula as the proposed site for Liberty Quarry project -- an open pit mine that will blast and crush rock 24 hours a day for the next 75 years. The gravel will be used primarily in San Diego County.
Opponents of the site call it a threat to the environment that brings with it a host of ills including: legitimate health, safety, logistical, spiritual and economic concerns. Supporters praise the proposed project for its potential economic benefits.
The proposed Liberty Quarry project is undergoing a review by the Riverside County Planning Commission. The Commission will hear arguments from both sides and will ultimately make a decision on whether or not to grant a mining permit.
