LA City Council Committee Rejects Ban On Genetically Modified Food

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Los Angeles City Council committee couldn't stomach a ban on genetically modified food.

City News Service says the Arts, Parks, Health, Aging and River Committee voted Monday to reject a proposed ban on the cultivation and sale of genetically modified crops. That means the issue won't go before the full council.

The vote was 3-2. Opponents cited the unknown costs of enforcing a ban and said state and federal agencies are the proper authorities to deal with the issue.

Committee member Joe Buscaino remarked: "We're not the seed police."

Supporters said time is short because a state law that goes into effect next month will bar cities from banning genetically modified crops.
