CHP Reaches Tentative Furlough Agreement Amid Looming Budget Deadline

MONTEREY PARK (CBS) — California Highway Patrol officers have reached a tentative furlough agreement in efforts to help close the state's $16 billion budget gap.

Under the proposed deal, 1,600 officers would be furloughed eight hours each month resulting in a of 5 percent pay cut per year starting July 1.

The Legislature has until Friday to pass a state budget. The CHP was the first union to agree to cuts.

A recent field poll found that Governor Jerry Brown's approval rate is slipping.

The survey reveals that 43 percent of voters said they don't have much confidence in the governor to solve the budget crisis, while 65 percent said they didn't in the Legislature.
