CHP officers shoot man for allegedly throwing rocks at cars in Riverside County
California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a man who was allegedly throwing rocks at cars in Riverside County on Monday evening.
It happened at around 5 p.m. on Gilman Springs Road near SR-79, just north of San Jacinto, where officers were called after receiving multiple 911 calls regarding the man hurling rocks at cars, according to CHP investigators.
"Officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact the male, who then began to throw rocks toward the officers," CHP said. "Officers utilized verbal commands and non-deadly force options in an attempt to subdue the subject. He continued to advance toward the officers, at which point and officer-involved shooting occurred."
They did not say how many times the man, who has still not been identified, was shot.
Paramedics with the Riverside County Fire Department rushed to the scene and despite attempted life-saving measures, the man was declared dead at the scene.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department, Riverside County District Attorney's Office prosecutors and the Riverside County Force Investigations Detail have all launched independent investigations into the matter and to determine if the shooting was justified.
