Crews Gain Handle On Ammonia Leak In Long Beach

LONG BEACH ( — An ammonia leak inside a cold storage facility in Long Beach prompted a hazardous-materials team to respond as well as the U.S. Coast Guard.

KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports that the incident at the Long Beach Cold Storage and Logistics facility on West Anaheim Street just west of Magnolia Avenue.

Ammonia leaks causes closure of surrounding streets in Long Beach

Authorities say they were alerted to the leak by a passerby who smelled ammonia about 4:56 a.m. Saturday.

By 8 a.m., a Hazmat team had entered the facility and closed the valves of the leaking 4,000-gallon diffuser tank.

The incident forced the closure of several surrounding blocks.

By 11:30 a.m., authorities reported that the situation was under control and residents in the area were being allowed to leave their homes.

No evacuations were ordered.

The cause of the leak was not immediately known.
