Charges Dismissed In Deadly L.A. Toyota Crash

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors have dismissed charges of reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter against a Southern California woman who blamed her deadly Lexus crash on a mechanical malfunction.

Unmi Suk Chung of Torrance claims her Lexus RX330 suddenly sped out of control and the brakes failed before she crashed on Interstate 10 in Los Angeles two years ago, killing a passenger.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office dismissed the charges last month in the wake of Toyota's recall of millions of cars after sudden acceleration problems were blamed for hundreds of crashes.

Prosecutor John Lynch tells the Los Angeles Times that he believes Chung was at fault but publicity over the Toyota recalls would make it hard to win a conviction.
