Teenager killed in shooting at Southern California football game
A teenage boy was killed and a 15-year-old boy was arrested after a shooting at a high school football game in Bakersfield on Friday night, according to police.
In a news release, Bakersfield Police Department officers said they were called to Independence High School, located in the 7500 block of Stockdale Highway, at around 8 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found the 17-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He has not yet been publicly identified.
"Preliminary investigation indicates the incident began as a fight between a group of individuals that resulted in the shooting," police said.
On Saturday, police provided further details on the investigation, including the arrest of a 15-year-old in connection with the fatal incident. The suspect, who wasn't identified due to his age, was arrested for murder and participation in a criminal street gang.
"Investigators have determined that the victim and suspect were known to one another and that this was not a random act of violence," an updated news release shared the day after the shooting said. Police also shared a photo of the arrest on social media.
Though exact details surrounding the incident still remain under investigation, police said they were being assisted by personnel from the Kern High School District Police Department and Kern County Sheriff's Office.
"Our deepest sympathies remain with the family and loved ones of the 17-year-old who tragically lost his life. We also recognize the impact this incident will have on the family of the 15-year-old who was arrested," a statement from Bakersfield police said. "Two young lives and two families have been forever changed by an act of violence, and we extend our compassion to everyone affected by this tragedy."
According to an Instagram post from the Independence High School football team, the Falcons were taking on the Centennial High School Hawks in their first game of the season.
Video from the scene showed dozens of fans and players from both teams running from the field after the gunshots rang out.
