Architect Who Popularized Googie Style Eldon Davis Dies At 94

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Family members says architect Eldon Davis, known as the father of the California coffee shop, has died.

Luana Davis told the Los Angeles Times her husband died Friday at West Hills Hospital in Los Angeles at the age of 94.

Davis' designs include the building and signs for the classic 1957 Norms restaurant on La Cienega Boulevard, both inspired by the Space Age and the area's car culture.

Some of the features at Norms, the vaulted roof, room-length dining counter and neon sign, were the hallmarks of architecture known as Googie.

Davis and partner Louis Armet didn't invent Googie, but are said to have refined it.
