Adrian Gonzalez Declined To Stay With Dodgers At Trump Hotel In Chicago, Report Says
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Dodgers first baseman and NLCS Game 2 hero Adrian Gonzalez declined to stay with the Dodgers at the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago during a road trip in late May and early June, according to a report.
"I didn't stay there," Gonzalez told the Long Beach Press-Telegram. "I had my reasons."
The implication is clear -- Gonzalez was born in San Diego but spent much of his youth in Tijuana. Gonzalez has also competed with the Mexican national baseball team in three editions of the World Baseball Classic.
Trump, meanwhile, has called Mexican immigrants "rapists" who bring crime and drugs to the United States.
Gonzalez declined to elaborate on his reasons for declining to stay at the Trump-owned hotel.
"We're here to play baseball not talk politics," he told the Press-Telegram.
Gonzalez and his teammates faced no such quandary in booking a hotel for the start of their NCLS series in Chicago this weekend.
The Trump hotel requires a non-refundable deposit to hold a block of rooms, but the Dodgers did not know until their Game 5 victory over the Nationals late Thursday night that they'd need to reserve a block of rooms in Chicago. The team made arrangements at a different hotel, the Press-Telegram reported.
