$75K In Computers, Equipment Stolen From Winnetka Elementary School

WINNETKA (CBS) — School officials say $75,000 worth of computers and other electronic equipment have been stolen from a San Fernando Valley elementary school, just weeks before the start of the school year.

The burglary happened earlier this week in 12 classrooms at Sunny Brae Elementary School. Thieves stole 13 computers, seven laptops, seven projectors and six document readers. Educators say the equipment was not insured.

"It seemed very well organized, very well planned. They knew what they were going after . . .," said Principal Susan Lasken.

Authorities believe the criminals got into the classrooms by prying open doors with crowbars.

Classes resume at Sunny Brae on Sept.7 and teachers planned to use the stolen computers everyday.

"Its going to be hard because our kids are mostly low income English language learners and most of them don't have any computers at home," Lasken said.

Teacher Sandy Mills added, "I'm devastated," who incorporates the computers, like many of the teachers, into daily reading and math lessons.

Educators say since the computers have been in use at the school, students have shown significant improvement in state exams.

"It just breaks your heart to think that someone would go to a school where you know that people don't have enough resources, there's not enough time, the students need so much that we can't give them, and take away what we do have," said teacher Shannon Gordon.

Sunny Brae Elementary School doesn't have enough money to replace the computers and is asking for help. Those interested are asked to call (818) 341-0931.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call school police at (213) 742-8219.
