7 injured after grisly hit-and-run crash in Temecula

Seven people were injured in a grisly and violent four-car crash caused by a hit-and-run driver in Temecula on Sunday. 

Deputies and firefighters were dispatched to the intersection of Butterfield Stage Road and Channel Street just after 7 p.m., according to statements from both the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and CalFire. 

"Preliminary findings revealed the vehicle traveling southbound on Butterfield Stage Road entered the intersection against a red signal, as the other vehicle entered the intersection on a green signal traveling westbound on Channel Street," said RSO's statement. 

Four of the victims were hospitalized after the incident, two of which are said to have suffered serious injuries and two that suffered moderate injuries, firefighters said.

Three people were treated at the scene but declined further medical care. 

By the time deputies arrived, one of the drivers in the crash had fled the scene. 

"Deputies located and detained the suspect, who was identified as 36-year-old Matthew Thomas Jackson of Temecula," deputies said. 

He was booked on for hit-and-run and driving under the influence. 

Firefighters say that all four of the involved cars suffered major damage and extrication efforts were required to help some of the victims out of their vehicles. 

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. 

Video from the scene posted on CitizenApp shows the severe damage that some of the cars suffered. The intersection was closed for hours as the investigation continued.
