19 Malnourished, Neglected Dogs Rescued From Santa Ana Home

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Animal control officers reportedly rescued nearly two dozen dogs, found to be ill or neglected, from a Santa Ana home Tuesday.

Officers came around 8:40 a.m. to speak to the homeowners, a mother and son, in the 2200 block of West 14th Street after receiving a complaint, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. The woman said she rescued the dogs from Mexico.

They found 22 dogs of various breeds and ages inside, and 19 of those were suffering from a variety of maladies. Some had mange and scabies, while others showed visible signs of malnutrition and eye infections.

The dogs have been taken to an Orange County shelter.

Bertagna says no arrests were made. Investigators have turned over the case to prosecutors, who will decide if the woman should be charged with animal neglect or animal cruelty.
