ADELANTO (AP) — A rape suspect is dead and a Southern California sheriff's deputy wounded after a shootout at a Mojave Desert home.

San Bernardino County deputies investigating a rape case went to the rural Adelanto home on Thursday afternoon and the suspect refused to come out. Sgt. Lon Jacobs says the man then opened fire, wounding a deputy.

Deputies then returned fire, mortally wounding the man. His name hasn't been released.

The wounded deputy was taken to a hospital, treated and released.
