Study: Working Moms OK For Kids

Working moms are not necessarily bad for babies! The study from Columbia University is among the first to measure the effect of "maternal employment" on a child's development during his or her first year of life. The focus was not just on the potential harm caused by mothers being out of the house but also on the possible benefits of her job -- including a higher income and better child care.

The report shows that infants raised by mothers working full-time scored a little lower on cognitive tests, but that was offset by several positives, including high-quality child care and moms being more responsive to their children.

The same study shows no bad effects from moms working part-time and no ill effects after the child's first birthday.
