The best of Broadway comes to the Metroplex again this year. Tony Award-winning shows drawn from Broadway classics, rock operas and Hollywood comedies will be on stage all over the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with local talent entertaining in some historic performances.

The 2009 Tony Award winner for Best Play comes to the Metroplex in May at the Kalita Humphries Theater. The story begins with a playground fight between two 11 year olds, and escalates into an all-night argument between their parents. From plain smugness all the way to racism and homophobia, "God of Carnage" is a smart, funny trip from a minor dustup straight through to a paranoid explosion.

The Contemporary Theatre of Dallas will put on "Crimes Of The Heart" in June and July, bringing the 1981 Pulitzer Prize-winning play to Dallas. The black comedy of a family awaiting the death of their grandfather while confronting all of their own past sins and conflicts, "Crimes of the Heart" is also a Tony Award winner and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award winner for best play.

When Green Day first broke through in the mid-90s, it would have been considered a monumental stretch to say the three-piece punk band would one day be the toast of Broadway. After winning the Grammy Award for best Rock Album for "American Idiot" in 2004, the rock opera was taken to Broadway, where it ran for more than four hundred shows. Now, "American Idiot" finally comes to Dallas, telling the story of three friends making the decision between chasing their dreams and staying in the mind-numbing safety of the suburbs.

The Texas Ballet Theater will present two world premieres in April at their Portraits Ballet Festival at the Wyly Theatre. The first weekend (April 20-22) features George Balanchine's Apollo, inspired by the Greek God who was the patron of music and poetry. Ben Stevenson's Bartok also premieres there, a showcase of neoclassical dance. The second weekend (April 27-29) features Stevenson's Image, based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, and also Val Caniparoli's Lambarena, which features the music of Bach intertwined with African rhythms and dance.

The regional premiere of "Legally Blonde" comes to Dallas in June, on the Level Ground Arts Main Stage. "Legally Blonde," adapted from the movie of the same name, is the story of Elle Woods, a homecoming queen spurned by her boyfriend and driven to enroll at Harvard Law School. The show was a Laurence Olivier Award winner for Best New Musical, and also nominated for several Tonys.
