Major League Baseball has ruled that the Detroit Tigers did not intend to throw a pitch that struck the plate umpire in the shoulder and knocked him to the ground.
Plate umpire Quinn Wolcott was struck in the left shoulder Wednesday by a fastball from Detroit's Buck Farmer that sailed past the mitt of backup catcher John Hicks.
16 games remain in the Tigers' season. Ausmus may be down to the same number as the team's manager.
Chicago has won five of six. Detroit has lost six in a row.
