Castellanos will be tough to replace -- the 24 year old was having a breakout year, batting .286 with 18 home runs.
The 24-year-old suffered a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metacarpal of his left hand after being hit by a pitch during Saturday's 6-5 win over the Mets.
Martinez threw Jay Bruce out at the plate on the final play of the game, enabling the Detroit Tigers to hold on for a pulsating 6-5 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday night.
"There are certain times where the noise comes up over the fan, and I think the loudest I've seen it in a while was J.D. the other night," Ausmus said.
Justin Verlander allowed only two runs and struck out nine, but the Mets ran his pitch count up to 103 to force him out of the game.
Granderson had a breakout year during the Tigers' magical run in 2006 and went on to be an All-Star with Detroit in 2009 before he was traded.
Schierholtz started the season with Detroit's Triple-A team in Toledo. He was released May 23.
The Tigers can breathe a sigh of relief.
Zimmermann was knocked out of Thursday's game in the second inning after surrendering six runs on six hits.
Zimmermann (9-5) allowed six runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings, failing to strike out a batter in his first outing since June 30.

Anderson was leading off the game when he was hit by Jordan Zimmermann's pitch. He was able to stay in initially and eventually came around to score a run, but he was removed when the White Sox took the field.
